Beijing Municipal Bureau of Environmental Protection has the following major responsibilities:
1. To manage local environmental work according to the state laws and regulations and to draft local environmental protection plans.
2. To prevent and combat pollution, protection and improvement of the living environment and ecological environment to ensure sustained, healthy social and economic development.
3. To be responsible for nuclear safety, radiation environment, radioactive waste management. To draft emergency operation procedures for combating nuclear leakage and radiation environment. To supervise nuclear facilities' safety, nuclear technology employment and anti-pollution measure in radioactive mineral resources mining.
4. To supervise protection of natural reserves, scenic spots and forest parks. To be responsible for protection of biological diversity, wide animals, everglade and desertization prevention.
5. To coordinate among all government organizations in various regions to handle big environment issues and investigate environment pollution accidents.
6. To draft and publicize pollutant emission standards. To announce regularly about air and water quality conditions in Beijing.
7. To outline and set up environmental protection administration systems.
8. To organize research and demonstration project on environmental protection.
9. To manage environment monitoring, statistics and information work. To supervise environmental protection education.
10. To conduct foreign exchanges regarding environmental protection.
11. To undertake other relevant assignments of Beijing Municipal Government.
