Shunyi District has a long history: in Spring and Autumn Annals (770-476 BC) and Warring States (476-221 BC), it belonged to the State of Yan; in the Han Dynasty, it was called Yuyang Shire; in the Tang Dynasty, it was called Shun Zhou; at the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, it was renamed as Shunyi County. After the founding of the New China, it belonged to Tongzhou Prefecture of Hebei Province, and was put under Beijing City in March 1958.In March 1998£¬with the official approval by State Council, Shunyi County was changed into a district of Beijing.
Shunyi District is in the northeast suburbs of Beijing City, its urban area is 30 km away from the city center£¬its total area is 1020 square kilometers£¬covering 19 towns, 2 street offices, 424 administrative villages£¬with a permanent population of 750,000.
Since the "Tenth Five-Year Plan" period, under the leadership of the municipal CPC and the municipal government, the people of the whole district have been grasping tightly the golden chances of China's entry into the WTO and Beijing's preparations for the Olympics, adhering to the principle of taking economic development as the central task£¬taken the "Tenth Five-Year Plan" as the guide, trying to innovate in every aspect, enhancing the environment construction constantly, carrying out the IT industrialization strategy, trying our best to build up an internationalized air port district, developing an operational mechanism characterized by amalgamation of all industries, laying stress on the Olympic economy, expanding the five major industrious groups, and going all out to build up a new image of a "green international part". In 2002£¬Shunyi was awarded the titles "District of High Civilization of the Capital" and "Advanced District in Building-up of Civilized Rural Towns of the Whole Country", successively, marking that the three-civilization construction of the district has entered a new stage.
Looking on the future£¬Shunyi District is faced with many historic opportunities for its development. The start-up of a group of key projects of Beijing, such as the strategy of "Two Axes, Two Belts, and Several Centers", the expansion of Capital International Airport, the construction of the Olympic arena in Shunyi, the construction of Beijing Auto Production Base, the overall engineering of the Chaobai River, and so on, has infused new great impetuses for the frog-leaping development of economy and society of the whole district, and opened a brand-new page for the development of Shunyi.
